The socio-economic impacts of tourism industry on residents : a case study of Olumo Rock, Abeokuta, Nigeria

The study evaluates the socio economic impact of Olumo Rock on residents of Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. It employed purposive sampling technique through administration of questionnaire and oral interview to collect information from 140 residents in the study area. Findings showed that about two third (58.5%) of the residents acknowledged that tourism positively contributed to the socio economic improvement of the study area. Study also showed that there were significant increases in the mean values of prices of goods and services, transportation cost, noise and crime resulting from touristss visitations to the area. It suggests that the Federal Government of Nigeria should formulate holistic policies to harness the positive impacts of tourism and prevent the negative ones.
