The Quebec cadastre was established more than one hundred years ago. Its main objective was to complement the land registration system by providing parcel identifiers to link conveyance documents with the land affected. Although there were mechanisms for its maintenance, they were bypassed. As a result, the cadastre deteriorated. New legislation has recently been adopted to renovate the cadastre and to ensure its maintenance in the future. Cadastral surveys, the geodetic network and base mapping will now be integrated to provide a multipurpose cadastre. A special fund created by the legislation will finance the renovation. A system of formed agreements has been developed to ensure active participation by Quebec municipalities. The municipalities, who were strong supporters in urging the government to renovate the cadastre, are being encouraged to develop urban information systems with spatial referencing to improve the management of land-related information.
