Two types of land tenure systems operate in Fiji. One, its customary land tenure systems, is based on communal ownership of land and subsistence farming. Although customary land tenure has prevailed over the centuries, British colonial rule has influenced its present form. The other, the 'western' land tenure system, based on individual ownership of land and commercial farming, was introduced into the country by its British colonial rulers over the last century. This article confines itself to Fiji's customary land tenure systems.
