Optimizing land resources, transforming resources into value

Yap, Eaisy

Singapore is a young and small nation. Land is one of Singaporees most precious resources. It constitutes a major share of a nationns wealth and underpins almost every sector of our economy. Everyday, commercial projects, residential projects, educational institutions, health facilities, defence installations, manufacturing plants, shopping complexes and art and culture venues, compete for space in our land scarce city state. It is vital that we optimize our land resources for the economic and social development of Singapore. The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) is the custodian of State land in Singapore. SLAAs primary task is to formulate sound policies to facilitate the allocation of land for various uses. This is achieved through sale and management of State properties. Land is the platform for economic and social activities. SLA performs an important and integral role as a land and property regulator to enhance the attractiveness of Singapore as a place to live and work. As such, we have to remain resourceful, flexible, nimble, anticipate and respond to changes in the environment quickly. This paper focuses on how SLA strives to create value in the way we manage our State properties for the economic and social development of the nation.
