Metropolitan areas and the interdependencies with rural development

Muller, Rolf

In Europe we donnt know the huge billions-cities as arising now in China and less in Latin America. Still the Metropolitan Areas in Europe for example in Germany =Ruhrgebiet; UK = Greater London and France = Paris and all his suburbs; have their own specific needs. After the middle ages several cities in the Netherlands got their own specific power and motor for growth. The common point of all of them is that they are situated in our Delta. The Delta is of course the point where international contacts from overseas meet the Netherlands. During the industrial revolution King William a little listening to his new parliament- decided that the growth in the Delta and so for the whole Netherlands- should be concentrated to four cities. And the growth of every city should be concentrated to his own topic: *Amsterdam as international financial centre; *Rotterdam as international harbour with industrial and trade development; *Den Haag as national centre for the government; *Utrecht as national centre and junction for all the important railways and highh-ways.
