Land consolidation in Finland : a farmer driven project with many goals
Konttinen, Kalle
In the late 1990s the common belief in the National Land Survey of Finland was that land consolidations were coming to an end. Land division in the rural areas of western Finland was not suitable for modern farming, and land consolidation projects were often long-lasting and heavily confronted by landowners. The need to reform the Land consolidation procedure was obvious. New ideas were developed in the land consolidation units of the National Land Sur-vey on how land consolidations should be carried out. In 2002 the National Land Survey pre-pared process guidelines to assess the need for land consolidation. Guidelines made land con-solidations more farmer-driven and emphasis was put on preparatory work. By the end of 2006 over 50 000 hectares of new land consolidations were pending in Finland.
