Creative commons license primer
Onsrud, Harlan J.
The question was posed "Why do we need Creative Commons??. Currently there is a lot of orphaned works available online and these are not being used due to the risk associated with unknown ownership and usage rights. The problem with copyright is that it becomes effective at the point of creation whether the author wishes it or not. Even if there is minimal creativity in the content, permission must be sought for reuse; use without permission is at your own peril. However, it is often difficult to know whether permission for reuse is required. Often it is very difficult for the creator, user and even lawyers to be able to determine the appropriate usage rights and whether they are required or not. The Creative Commons licensing seeks to simplify this situation by providing easy to read symbols that define usage rights. This presentation provided a useful introduction to help the workshop understand the motivation behind the license and what each of the symbols means.
