Assessment of Land Use and Land Cover Change Using GIS and Remote Sensing Techniques: A Case Study of Abobo District, Gambella Region, Ethiopia
AZEB W.DEGIFE
With the expansion of large scale land acquisition and population growth results significant and rapid changes in land use and land cover change in the area. In recent times, it’s observed that in the study area there is an increasing demand for agricultural investment and high population growth. This demand results changes in land use/ cover and as well increase various environmental impacts. The aim of the study is to quantify change and analyze the land use/land cover change from 1987 to 2017 (30 years). The satellite images used in this study collected from Landsat Thematic Mapper at resolution of 30 m of 1987 and sentinel2A image at resolution of 10m of 2017. This satellite images are used for quantification of spatial and temporal dynamics of land use/cover change. Supervised classification is used for the land use land cover classification. Finally post-classification approach is used for detecting and assessing land use cover changes of Abobo district in Gambella region, Ethiopia. Water bodies, settlement area, marsh vegetated and barren area are increase in study area. On the other hands small scale farm area, forest land and savanna and grasslands are decline. In general, the driving force behind this change in study area was large scale land acquisition and population growth.
