"Freguesia da Luz" land consolidation project

Silva Texeira, Margarida M.

The Luz parish is located in the Mourro municipality, inside the area covered by the Alqueva Multi-purpose Project, and was the most affected among all the parishes partially flooded by the Alqueva Dam reservoir. About 62 % of its area (5082 ha) was submerged and the Luz village itself had to be removed, because of its location under level 153. Part of the road network, the totality or part of many land parcels, as well as holes wells and rural constructions were submerged. It also got sunken a significant portion of the Terras da Aldeia da Luzz, an area that constituted the physical support of the village economical structure. As a result of this situation, the local productive systems and landscape were deeply changed, natural values were lost and the already deficient situation of agriculture activity was aggravated. So itts within the scope of the largest national public work construction that the decision of building a new village is taken, assuming EDIA1 the obligation to replace the above mentioned Terras da Aldeia da Luzz.
